10 Ways to Stay on the Safe Side This Season

Water, water, water your live tree: Dry trees pose a fire risk. Make a fresh cut on the base before putting your tree into a stand and water it frequently.
Check your lights, check them twice: Inspect all of your electric lights and decorations for damage or wear. Cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires and loose connections may pose a fire or shock hazard.
Plan your fire escape: Use the holidays as a time to plan and practice a fire escape plan with your loved ones. Identify at least two exits from every room in the house, and have a safe meeting place away from your home.
Sleep safe by installing carbon monoxide alarms: Be sure that a carbon monoxide alarm is installed outside all sleeping areas in your home.
Limite plug-in toys to the big kids: It's not safe to give a small child a toy or product that needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet.
Give wrapping paper a second life: Don't burn used wrapping paper as it may cause intense flash fires. And throwing it out adds waste. Consider recycling or repurposing it instead.
Know your lights and cords: Do not connect more than three miniature light strings together. Also, be sure to check the rating on your extension cords, and do not plug in more than the recommended wattage.
Steer your tree clear: Your tree should be positioned at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources. It should also not block any doorways or exits.

The $8,000 tax credit for first time home buyers has been extended for home sales occurring on or after January 1, 2009 and on or before April 30, 2010. However, in cases where a binding sales contract is signed by April 30, 2010, a home purchase completed by June 30, 2010 will qualify.
For the $6,500 repeat home buyer tax credit, buyers must have owned and lived in their previous home for five consecutive years out of the last eight years.

15 Ways to Winterize Your Home (continued)
Step 11. Get to know your plumbing. Learn how to shut the water off and know where your pipes are located. If your pipes do freeze, time is of the essence. The quicker you can shut off the water, or direct your plumber to the problem, the better chance you have to prevent pipes from bursting.
Step 12. Watch out for wood rot. Check your bathroom, ceilings and walls for signs of wood rot. If there is a stain showing, it is most likely do to a leak. Wood rot does not go away - it usually gets worse by eating away your walls. Your bathroom in particular is vulnerable to mold. In order to avoid getting sick or having to initiate some serious home repairs, make sure all leads and sources of moisture are found and repaired.
Step 13. Don't forget the air conditioner and exterior spigots. Drain hoses and air conditioner pipes to keep your air conditioner in good working order when the season changes again. Make sure you turn off exterior spigots so you are not wasting water due to leaks that may freeze on the sidewalk or porch and create a dangerous situation.
Step 14. Take special care if you plan to be away from home. If you are away for an extended period of time, have the water system drained by a professional to keep pipes from freezing or bursting.
Step 15. Store away lawn equipment. Drain the gasoline from lawnmowers, weedwackers and other engines that won't be used until spring.

We have a winner!!
Dale Hunt is shown at the Paducah Home Show in February of 2009 picking up his $1000 gas card from Taylor Homes. Dale was the winner of the gas card in the Taylor Homes...."get a free estimate and be entered to win a prize" contest conducted in 2008. Potential Taylor Home owners were able to visit any Taylor model home and get a free estimate. Their name was then entered in a drawing for a $1000 gas card or a 50" plasma television.
